THEOLOGOS

Theologos, also known as Agios Ioannis Theologos (until 1940), or Theologos of Phthiotis, is a settlement in Central Greece, in the Regional Unit of Phthiotis, approximately 150 km northwest of Athens.

It has a permanent population of 586 inhabitants (2021 census).

Theologos is a popular tourist resort situated on a bay along the coast of the Opountios Gulf, and serves as the port of Malesina. It belongs to the Municipality of Lokroi and was built on the site of the harbor of the ancient city of Alos, dating back to the 6th century BC.

The settlement was founded in 1923 by a few families from Malesina who moved down to the coast.

Its name comes from the small chapel of Saint John the Theologian. The area has a long history, as the ruins of the ancient city of Alos lie nearby. Many of the remains are submerged along the shoreline and beneath the sea, including houses and tombs, suggesting that earthquakes were responsible for the destruction of the ancient city.

The area is well known as a tourist resort because of its beautiful location. The entire settlement stretches around a large bay.

The main beach runs along the coastal road. It is long but relatively narrow, with fine sand and cold, crystal-clear waters.

The local harbor accommodates both small and larger boats.

Other beaches in the area include Vlychada, Lekouna, Arsanas, and the beach belonging to the Housing Cooperative of Permanent Officers of the Hellenic Army (OSMAES).
